There are two types of people in this world when it comes to traveling – you’ve got your over packers, and your under packers. I just so happen to be the former… a serial over packer. My problem lies in the fact that I obsess over every scenario I could ever possibly encounter while traveling, and make sure I’m prepared for it all. For example, I typically bring at least double the number of outfits than days I’ll actually be traveling, just in case I need 2-3 midday wardrobe changes each day (because duh, don’t we all?) But, for my upcoming trip to Miami, I vowed to break free from the chains of overpacking by limiting myself to ONE carry on bag. (I know, WHO AM I?) This has never happened, y’all. In fact, I pulled out my carry on bag and realized it still has the tag on it… because I’ve literally never used it. So here I am… just a girl admitting she has a packing problem, and doing her best to overcome it 😉 Here’s how I packed for one week in Miami in one carry on…
First things first… toiletries
This is the main area where I’m both confused and enamored by people who are able to pack their things in only a carry on… how on earth do you pack your toiletries? Personally, I’m very into to my daily beauty rituals, so it’s important to me to keep them goin’ even while traveling. Okay, who am I kidding? Especially when traveling! Since I’m already throwing myself into a new environment while traveling, I like to keep as much as I can the same so my body isn’t like “what’s happening to me??”
I spent this last week making a list of all the toiletries I’d typically pack for a trip, and researching if mini travel versions (under 3.4 ounces!) are available for each of them. It turns out, I was able to find everything except for my shave gel. (Which I ended up pumping a few drops of it in an empty travel container I purchased at Target. Easy peasy.)
I was pretty amazed by how much space I was actually able to save by switching to travel sizes. I know… most of you are probably like, “Yeah, duh Chels”, but I really didn’t think a few ounces would make that big of a difference!
Plus, can we talk about how adorable travel sizes of things are??
Next up, outfits
As I mentioned, I’m terrible about limiting my outfit choices, or practicing any version of minimalism while traveling. For example, if I know I’ll be going on a nice dinner while traveling, I’ll typically pack a couple of options for that one night, so I have flexibility depending on my mood. This trip, I’m committed to packing one outfit for each event. Here’s a bit of our itinerary and what I plan to wear:
Friday: Early AM Travel, Exploring Miami, Night Out with Friends
There will be a lot going on on Friday, and I actually do anticipate wearing a couple of outfits. I’ll wear something comfy on the plane… probably these leisurely Outdoor Voices shorts and this super soft Rivet & Thread tee I just got and my trusty Birkenstocks. Once we arrive, we’ll be exploring around the city for a few hours. Then, for the evening here’s my outfit for when we go out with friends.
Top: Dee Elly | Skirt: Le Lis
Saturday: Family Day and Exploring Fort Lauderdale
On Saturday we’ll spend time with my boyfriend’s family, then explore around the town he grew up in. I plan to wear something casual and comfy.
Top: Free People | Cutoffs: Madewell
Sunday: Warped Tour
lol yes, I am indeed going to the final day of the final Warped Tour for my boyfriend’s birthday. It should be excellent people watching, plus provide allllll the middle school nostalgia from my pseudo skater days (minus the actual skating, obvs). I’ll wear the least amount of clothing possible to stay cool, plus tons of sunscreen.
Monday: Pool Party
Tuesday: The Keys!
We’re splurging a bit for my boyfriend’s birthday by renting a convertible to drive out to The Keys for the night. I’ll wear my jean cutoffs and a simple top for the drive down, then will change into a flowy dress for our celebratory dinner.
Maxi Dress: old Altar’d State
Wednesday: The Keys!
We’ll spend our second day in The Keys lounging at the pool, most likely. I’ll probably use my favorite romper as a swimsuit cover up.
Romper: Free People
Thursday: Travel Day
I fully plan on rocking my Outdoor Voices sweatpants and a comfy tee for our early flight back home, because ain’t nobody got time to look cute for a 6am flight.
Last thing… travel gear
My priorities for airports/flights are entertainment and moisture (because home girl gets dryyyyy in the air.) Here’s what I’ll pack in my Madewell weekender:
- Headphones for my audiobook – I’ll be starting Braving the Wilderness!
- Notebook – I tend to get random bursts of inspiration on flights, so I always have a notebook and colorful pens with me
- Camera – I just invested in a camera recently, and you best believe this baby is coming along for the trip!
- Lotion – bum bum cream is life
- Water bottle – I hate buying water bottles in general, but especially for the outrageous airport prices. Most airports have water filter stations, so I just bring my trusty Yeti!
- Healthy snacks – I’m not about that hangry life, and I’ve fallen for the trap of eating crummy airport food far too many times
- Chapstick – I recently fell in love with this matcha chapstick (gimme all the matcha things, really)
- Face spray – I feel so bougie when I whip out my facial spray mid flight, but it feels so right
- Sanitizer – bye germs
- Large scarf and cozy socks – I’m always freezing on planes, so I pack a large scarf that doubles as a blanket, plus cozy socks
- ID and cards – duh
